Hong Kong Rules Twitter in Asia

We just did a bit of light-hearted research on Twitter in Asia which shows Hong Kong rules on Twitter.

Singapore is vying for second, followed at a distance by Malaysia and then China.

Now for the Caveats: The measurement is how many people follow the top 3 most followed Twitterers in each market - as found via Twitterholic.

Yes, this is a wildly unscientific and flawed measurement, but we enjoyed it.

Just updated China top 3 list to include @isaac and knock out my own account. Any other corrections welcome! My Twitter account made the list as a top 3 Twitterer in China, but would not make the list in Hong Kong!

Who are the top 3 most followed Twitterers in each market? See list below.

What are Asia’s top Twitterers talking about right now? Wait for a moment and this Yahoo Pipe will tell you:

Comments for “Hong Kong Rules Twitter in Asia”

  • As per Robert - @weirdchina - please see for Lonnie's ranking.
    http://twitter.grader.com/location/?Location=china
  • Hi Thomas - I think it is great to see that people in Hong Kong are starting to use Twitter more, and if you pay attention to the people starting to join, the conversations that are happening locally, and the people that are actually meeting in real life, it is really cool.

    I think showing the TwitterGrader scores however, are more interesting all of which Josh, Stanley & Jay are consistently up in the top as well. It is just more complicated than followers alone and shows that they all work hard to maintain a level of content, engagement, quality of followers etc. Having a score of 100 on Twitter Grader is no easy task. I like Twitalyzer too. Both of which I learned from Jay.

    Clearly a higher score on these sites helps brand credibility and if you are building an account for a client it gives them something measurable to work with. Pure Yoga HK is a great example. Geoff Wu has been working really hard on their Twitter account (not a client) and they are now clearly ranked in top 50 in HK on Twitter Grader. It is a good tool to become aware of early, because Twitter is not just about how many followers you have. It is about what your goals are in using Twitter, and making it work for you.
  • @djodcouk = Shanghai, China = 13k+

    Thanks for trying though!
  • Living proof that 16 years old (and @JayOatway) have way too much time on their hand ;)
  • Jealous? :)

    Yours Truly, @Joshlam
  • @Elliott - Be great if you wanted to dive into this territory again!

    @Jennifer - We're working on V2.0 now. Part of the problem is how quickly these numbers change!
  • JenniferBongar
    Thanks for starting the list. I look forward to the 'prime time' version.
  • Thanks for the tweet on the Cambodia ratings...
  • a fun analysis! I'd love to do more Twitter analytics, maybe doing an n-dimensional analysis of Followers, Followed, Follower growth, Update/Follower ratio, year on year growth rate on Followers and Followed, and present it as a fly through cube navigated via a special dataglove input device. But alas, I'm a bit short on time to do it....<sigh>
  • I think this is the statistic Tom got for that period of time from Mid-April to Mid-May, and it only gathers information from "countries" instead of each "region".
    As most of you know that Twitter Stats change every minute. As @thomascrampton said, this was a light-hearted version research. I think there would never be an "unflawed" version of this list while people can basically put whatever on the "location" field on Twitter.

    You'll get tons of comments, probably more than you want, on updates to this list! Which shows us how hungry we all are for some kind of rough metric on this stuff. Fun to interpret. Would be really interesting to further divide by language in which people are tweeting, to try to understand the impact of the numbers within and across different countries.
  • @milagro88: Top Pinoy Twitterers: @mistygirlph @JimAyson @chiniehdiaz @dantejarabelo
  • More notes from Twitter for updated version of this list:

    @milagro88: @mistygirlph @celsbels @chiniehdiaz Where r the pinoy tweeps?

    @christopheradam: @thecarol from Taiwan has 3,082 followers
  • @thomascrampton great list but it's flawed @lonniehodge is missing, please add him as soon as you can
  • @alex: Yes, as you say, more than a bit flawed. Clearly not a list ready for prime time.
  • More than a bit flawed, no? For example I follow @lonniehodge http://twitter.com/lonniehodge who has had 'Guangzhou, China' set as the location field in his profile for yonks, and has 27+k followers!

    Cheers, http://twitter.com/DalianDalian
  • Well, apparently you missed the queen of Taiwanese twitterverse : http://twitter.com/thecarol
