Best Hong Kong Haircut

Dec 18, 2008

Breaking from Asia, tech and media coverage, I had to share this scene today at the place where I get my hair cut in Hong Kong.

Nelson, the owner, plays Mozart while Samson cuts my hair cut. On previous occasions Nelson had a large glass of red wine on the piano while playing. Sam, who normally cuts my hair, was not there when I filmed this.

The hair washing chairs (hidden behind the stained glass) massage your back and the chairs for the haircut are old-style barbershop chairs. On top of that, the haircut at the end of it is excellent.

It is on the second floor of Citic Tower near the skybridge that goes to Admiralty MTR station. Tel: 2525-5297

'Allure' is not only the coolest shop in Hong Kong for a haircut, but also the best for colouring and straightening. Nelson has been doing my hair treatments since 2005, and I always leave his shop with healthy and silky hair. It's an incredible contrast to what other salons have done to my hair in the past. Maybe best of all is that he has a great eye. I ask him to suggest hair colours for me, and I'm always happy with the results. Debra Martin

Absolutely agree.  Nelson's haircuts are great and the atmosphere is very special.  He's moved though, to a new location on Hollywood Road (#26, 3rd floor), right behind the Mid-Levels escalator.
His cozy new place is now set up like a Viennese living room from the '20s.  The piano is also still there.  Sometimes Nelson and sometimes customers play.  A little oasis of European peace.
BTW, his new phone number is 6138 2828.
  • Wow...Awesome haircut in Asian style.
  • Great you had a good haircut, Erik! They really enjoy getting people from the posting, in part because the owner is an Internet-phobe. He find it hilarious and mystifying that people would find his barbershop through the Internet!

Tom, thanks for the recommendation. I went there yesterday (march 7, 2009) had a great haircut and was offered the 20% discount without asking for it. Best haircut I have had in HK. Highly recommended.

i once waited nearly an hour to see the d'aguilar guy! the old man with the choppy bowl cut who wears a powder blue half-turtleneck? i bring a magazine photo, he takes a single glance, and the scissors start dancing to the strange yet rapturous melody in his head. 30 minutes later, out I go! with a ravishing Zelda Fitzgerald-inspired 'do to suit the times. but is my guy salieri to your mozart? the 20% discount is currently under serious consideration.

Um, do you know the sailor's definition of a Hong Kong haircut?

nah, i vote for the old guy in the alley off D'Aguilar Street, on the right, just before the curve, just past Al's. 20 HK$. includes a free cigarette.
  • That's one classy barber! Seriously, one of a kind. :D

    20% discount, hahahaha...when I go to HK.
