Social Media in China and across Asia

Joelynn’s entry into Digital Marketing was inevitable, despite her ‘old school’ soul. It was five years ago when she joined the ATL folks at Ogilvy & Mather Advertising, after stints at Bates, Grey and M&C Saatchi.

At Ogilvy, she couldn’t help but notice the exciting stuff that was coming out from O One. Direct was at its peak while Digital was beginning to take hold.

The lure to switch disciplines was strong but fear and uncertainty held her back. She wasn’t even on MSN Chat and Facebook then. After talking to many people, including Dirk Eschenbacher, the O One Regional CD at that time,(who was in town to inspire Ogilvians), she finally took the plunge.

Four years later Joelynn is glad she took that step as more and more people are consuming their media and even socialising online.

While the warp speed of the digital world still scares her, she has embraced enough of it to write a paper that made finalist for Ogilvy Asia Pacific’s Digital Influence Essay Competition 2010 – Around the World in 80 Clicks: How to Influence Travellers in a Digital Environment.

Even though Joelynn still writes letters to pen-pals from her schooldays the old-fashioned way, she loves it that social media has allowed her to connect with old and new friends, writers, designers, chefs, politicians, digital gurus and other inspiring and remarkable thinkers.

Joelynn posts on Facebook, Twitter and two blogs when she has something interesting or worthwhile to share. She adheres to Uncle Ben’s ‘with great power comes great responsibility’ advice and will never subject her friends and followers to ‘I want a cupcake’ type of postings.
