Oops! Twitter Reveals My New Job

Twitter inadvertantly revealed my new job tonight - ahead of the official announcement - after I mentioned the news while speaking on a panel at the Council of Public Relations Firms in Hong Kong.

(There’s history here: The microblog earlier playing a role in nearly ending my marriage.)

As Cynthiamania tweeted, I have signed up to join OgilvyPR as Asia regional director of Digital Influence 360.

Led by Chris Graves, OgilvyPR is the industry’s strongest Asia team, and the digital team, led by John Bell in the US, has been at the forefront of developing tools and techniques for companies embracing the social web.

What is my job?

1- Build Community - Advocate, train and grow the digital community within Ogilvy.

2- Build Business - Win business regionally by advising new and existing clients on digital strategies.

3- Build Reputation - Develop Ogilvy’s “thought leadership” through blogging, writing and speaking about digital.

Why am I so excited about this job?

This role combines my two great passions: Asia and digital. I spent more than a decade reporting on Asia and the last five years immersed in digital.

It also fits my objective in leaving newspapers: Build businesses using the revolutionary tools offered by the Internet.

The Internet changed communication more than Gutenberg’s moveable type. For the first time in history, anyone with a phone line and computer could instantly publish to the world.

Now, however, there’s a new and growing digital divide between those companies relying on static websites and those embracing social media.

The world is speaking. Join us.

By the way - Twitter did NOT reveal your new job. YOU did (verbally) and someone else broadcast it via Twitter.

Why talk about it in public if had not yet formally been announced? I thought journalists usually coached the rest of us in media relations..............

  • shill for big-advertising .. cool .. let's keep the engines of consumption churning out the buy buy buy message, civilization depends on it .. and god knows 6 figures feels good .. enjoy .. and loss of independence of view-point, a small price to pay for security

i can't blame anyone for wanting to exit the news business, god knows it's been like watching the hindenberg burn in slow motion...but i question why TC wanted to be called a "journalist" in the last IHT profile. i guess we'll all have to rely only on richard li and rupert murdoch to give us unbiased news from asia. *sigh*
  • Is this the cyber version of what paparazzi do to you when they post themselves at your door hoping to snap a picture of your worst version of yourself walking the dog in dungarees or looking like you've been fighting with cats on the way to the bakery as you just rolled out of bed? (I'm just highlighting the female perspective of "Worst Nightmare Situations When Snapped By Paps"
  • congrats! well you ll have to deal with plenty of situations like those with your customers i guess....good luck!
