Napoleon Biggs of Web Wednesday and Aaron Farr on Hong Kong Internet trends and start-ups
Feb 5, 2008
Napoleon Biggs, man-about-town of the Hong Kong Internet, founder of web strategy company Palava Digital and convener of Web Wednesday, and Aaron Farr, recently arrived in Hong Kong and co-founder of open source software consultancy and game developer Jade Tower, speak about the latest Hong Kong Internet trends and start ups.
Some companies mentioned (and more):
Discuss.com.hk: The popular Hong Kong discussion forum that is an example of a creative outlet that people in Hong Kong use instead of going to blog or use myspace. For Napoleon, Blogging is a very American concept. People in Hong Kong get onto the Internet for forums and games. A transition to blogging requires a self-promotional aspect that is not prevalent. Aaron said, however, that there are more bloggers coming out and joining blogging events. These events, such as Web Wednesday, are bringing the Internet crowd offline.
Open Radio: A Hong Kong-focussed online radio platform with a growing number of stations.
Sifutv.com: An amusing Web TV program about a Kung Fu-master in dating who advises a foreign man. Some of the special effects are hilarious.
Frenzoo: A 3D social network with investment from the founding engineers of Skype, that comes out of Hong Kong’s 3D animation trend that has been driven by some of the companies out of Cyberport.
Dookaz: An online t-shirt company that includes community web shops and sets up design centers in places where they perceive a need.
Editgrid: A local company focussed on producing an online spreadsheet more powerful that Google Documents.
Bullpoo: A social networking site for stock traders. Finance is a very Hong Kong-style application of web 2.0.
Anyone know of other interesting Internet/media start-ups in Hong Kong?
