My Copyrights Violated by French TV

The video below, broadcast on the French TV news channel France24 and now loaded onto their YouTube, violates my copyrights.

The reporters I dealt with were excellent (They included Julien Pain, who knows a great deal about the Internet and censorship.). But the final version of the piece broadcast my video clip without any credit. You can even see my face as I conduct the video interview at 3:15 seconds.

I am categorized by the announcer as one of the TV station’s “Observateurs”. I found that I even have a homepage on their website with a copy-paste biography from my blog.

I won’t object to being considered one of their Observateurs. Perhaps I gave permission, I do not remember. They certainly have not sent me any paychecks.

I do, however, object to having my video posted without credit.

Should I serve a takedown notice against the television station and its 124 YouTube videos?

This situation is the reverse of my friend Loic Le Meur, whose YouTube channel was taken down by a French television station claiming copyright over an interview of Loic that he posted on his channel with their explicit permission.

  1. Hi Thomas,
I sent you a message to apologize for that mistake as soon as I noticed it. And I had only posted the video on Youtube so that you could see what we had done with your interview. I can take it down if you wish. Again, I do apologize for this mistake. But be sure we didn’t do that on purpose and that we don’t want to steal anybody’s work. As for you being one of our Observers. That’s the way we call people who comment on our web site. It’s not a paid job. But again, if you want us to delete your profile page from our web site, I’ll do it immediately. I’m sure you know how much I appreciate your work and I hope this incident - believe me, not intentional (I’m the one who sent you the F24 video) - will not keep you away from The Observers. Best,
    Julien Pain

  2. Julien (and France 24),

No worries at all and thank you for using my video.

I have worked long enough in newsrooms to realize that mistakes happen.

I really was more amused than angry.

Mainstream media companies have made such a habit of placing takedown notices on individuals, that I found it amusing to be on the opposite end of that situation.

Please do keep me on the list of Observateurs and let me know if I can be of help in future!

    Tom

  3. Congratulations! That’s the quality of the self-righteours media organizations in our free world. For your information, TO THIS DAY some media outlets are using photoes of Nepalese police to represent China’s crackdown in Tibet. See here:

Of course, everything is just a mistake, even if you committ the mistake again and again, month after month.
