iPhone evades the Great Firewall of China

Jan 14, 2008

Krapax writes that his iPhone, purchased in France, surfs sites normally blocked by the Great Firewall of China: Wikipedia, Daily Motion and Blogger.

“The phone is a bit slower than on the French network, but it works pretty well,” Krapax writes (and I translate from French). “It is great not messing with a proxy, like I need to do on my PC.”

He connects via China Mobile’s EDGE network on what appears on his phone to be a WAP/WEB connection. (He says it costs no extra, but let’s wait to hear about his phone bill at the end of the month.)

Can anyone else corroborate iPhone getting over the Great Firewall?

UPDATE: As I suspected, Krapax is now suffering sticker shock from the iPhone bill. Here is an item on his bill for 290,432 euros that he says is due to a YouTube video that he did not even watch to the end. I hope the numbers after the comma are for centimes and not Euros!

He also adds that the EDGE network is what likely allows him around the Great Firewall, rather than the iPhone itself.

  • Now the question is : how to evade/avoid "apocalypse snow" http://www.krapax.com/search/l...
Any problem in your province ??

  • Ha ha ha, thanks to Orange I don't pay anything more than my "normal" bill [ http://www.krapax.com/2008/01/... ]. Data: 94Mo from China : freeeee. And my blog is unblocked now [at least from Wuhan]. Enjoy.

  • In Tianjin I can surf Wikipedia through Google because Google has a new feature that breaks the web into phone-sized pieces that conveniently sneak past the censorship. I think the same would hold true for most blocked sites so long as they don't have any verboten words. Ironically enough, Krapax's blog is blocked where I'm sitting.
