Google’s Tiny Market Share of Search in Asia

GoogleasiaIt is often said that Western companies don’t understand Asia and Comscore’s latest State of the Internet certainly shows how Mountain View’s giant of search has taken the slow boat to Asia.

Google owns Europe and Dominates Latin America
Google’s market share of more than 90 percent in six European markets suggests why the Europeans are so desperate to push their Quaero project.

but seriously lags in Asia.
Google has a market share of less than 50 percent in Japan, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Korea (with only 5 percent).

    The problem with Google is the problem with all internet companies in Asia. They think that the day they arrived Asia was discovered. Not that any other industry is any different.

    All markets are a bit different and if you think you can dislodge Yahoo by impressing people with your name card your out of your minds.

    Google has a VP for Asia/Latin America. What ??

    Google worked, and may still, for years out of a temporary office in Hong Kong. Is that committment?

    Google wanted to meet my boss, the largest print/internet news gent in Chinese language media, and they give him 45 minutes to come to the Grand Hyatt to meet their VP. Again, one has to really wonder about their business skills...

    I think one can look at all the "online" problems in the world with this company, but at it's core it comes down to management focus and management skill. The basics
  • I would like to see what the English language share of Google's search is in these Asian markets. I think this would shed a huge amount of light on the strength/weaknesses of Google Asia play.
  • Google should make more asian evangelist!
  • I believe it's more of a language issue. Google hasn't been as successful as local companies to provide high quality searches based on Asian languages and characters.
