Xinhua Hiring Foreign Journalists

In what may be a sign of the times, while the New York media world burns (huge layoffs expected at Time Inc) Xinhua, the Chinese government’s news service, is hiring.

Xinhua News Agency Seeks Native Foreign Language Subeditors

Xinhua News Agency is seeking native speakers to fill the positions of subeditor in five languages — English, Spanish, French, Russian and Portuguese — in several departments. These departments are Domestic News for Overseas Services, International News, the website Xinhuanet.com and Sports News.

Applicants with a background in journalism are preferred. Qualified candidates will be offered a competitive salary and benefits package that includes health insurance, paid holidays and a return air ticket.

The headquarters of Xinhua are located in downtown Beijing. The agency has 31 branches in the Chinese mainland and bureaux in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions. It also has more than 100 bureaux around the world and five regional editorial offices.

Monthly Salary:

Approximately 15,000 RMB (2,140 U.S. dollars)

Qualifications:

1. Native speakers;
2. Minimum 3 years of experience in news reporting and/or editing;
3. A keen interest in China;
4. Good health, able to work overtime and under deadline pressure;
5. Responsible, committed and a team player;
6. Knowledge of word processing, computers and the Internet.

Responsibilities :

1. To ensure quality, professional journalistic writing;
2. To work closely and supportively with Chinese editors and reporters;
3. Rewrite news headlines, edit content and check facts;
4. Provide training to Chinese colleagues on writing news in foreign languages.
