Jay Oatway: Blackberry or iPhone?

Jay Oatway, editor of Charged magazine, answers the burning question of our time. The correct response in the Blackberry vs iPhone debate, it turns out, has less to do with the phone than the user.

Questions:

- Can you save money with an iPhone by getting email over wifi? Yes, but there are not so many hotspots. Blackberry has a good roaming service to keep the cost down.

- Other parameters include video quality (Blackberry has a great new screen) and the very nice Blackboard keyboard.

- The Storm is Blackberry’s full touch screen iPhone-killer. Even before that, the Bold version of Blackberry has a great screen, sound and flash to take photographs in low light.

- For Sync-ing, the iPhone works beautifully with a Mac. That said, Blackberry, does sync up.

- For travellers, the Blackberry is better. For those who hang out in coffee shops, the iPhone may be better.

Basic guide: If you wear a tie, you should get a Blackberry.

See below video for more details.

PS: Jay recommends that if you are looking for a cheap place to buy a phone go to Sincere. Check out this video direction guide by Hong Kong Phooey to reach the store.

I've had just about every iteration of Blackberry except the Storm and I now have an iPhone. Here's my view: the iPhone's email cannot even compare with Blackberry, particularly if you get hundreds of emails a day. But, other than that, the iPhone is better and a helluva lot more fun.
  • Great video! Makes the discussion much more interesting!
  • Useful to see that analysis. I fear the keyboard may be the killer difference for anybody who really needs to use a handheld to send real messages. Sadly, the Blackberry sync to Mac is VERY dodgy. Lots of complaints about mystery failures and very limited effort from RIM to do anything about it. Hmmm.
