Fight obesity of the rich and malnutrition of the poor

Sep 6, 2007

Table for Two is an initiative promoted in posters and brochures across the “Summer Davos” here in Dalian.

Intended to fight obesity and malnutrition at the same time, the project, spearheaded by James Kondo, encourages companies to donate 20 cents out of every meal served at their company cafeteria.

The meal at the cafeteria is supposed to be a healthy meal that fights the obesity present in wealthy nations, while the money raised helps combat malnutrition in developing nations through meals delivered through an alliance with the World Food Program.

Kondo said 32 companies have so far joined the initiative.

In this video, Kondo, who is president and vice-chairman of the Health Policy Institute in Japan, explains the concept in detail.

That's incredible, I never thought of things that way. Some people are dying of too much food and others for too little food. I wonder how this project worked out because I think it's a brilliant idea.

  • This is such an innovative project, it kind of annoys me how it is usually always the small guys (in corporate and governental terms) that come up with these ideas.

I think the ehtics and morality angle, as well as the health benefits of this program are bound to make this a highly subscribed to program in the U.S and first world countries.

This post's title — "Fight obesity of the rich and malnutrition of the poor" — may be misleading since — in rich countries — the lower your income the more chances you have to have obesity.
