China: Women Love France, Korea; Men Love USA, UK

Jul 23, 2009

In the run-up to the Shanghai Expo, 14,000 Chinese were surveyed about their attitudes towards other countries.

Some results are surprising, but even those with expected results are interesting to see:

- Chinese women love France (more than Chinese men). France is the second most popular pavilion.
- The American pavilion is the most popular (Ironic, since until about two weeks ago it looked like there would be no American pavilion).
- Those surveyed ranked Japan as the 4th most popular pavilion they hope to visit, but 45 percent also said they feel dislike towards Japan.
- Thailand was the second-most disliked country, with 20 percent saying dislike Thailand. (I find this surprising. Wonder what the cause is?)
- There is a great deal of confusion over the purpose of Expo, with 51 percent of those surveyed believing that Expo is “The Largest Trade Show in the World”.
- Perhaps because of this trade fair perception, Chinese visitors expect to spend more than 1,500rmb while there!

I posted some of the interesting graphs below, but you can download a full copy with complete methodology and questions here. This survey was done by Millward Brown, Lightspeed Research and Ogilvy PR (Disclosure: my employer). The survey will be conducted several times more as the Expo opens and progresses.

Any suggestions for questions in the next survey?

  3. You're curious about Thailand, but me – I just have one thing I wanna ask…

    Egypt?! :O

    LOL

  4. Haha funny “The Largest Trade Show in the World”. It's no surprise though, Chinese are used to commercialism. Go to a science fair in Shenzhen and you just see companies advertising boring products.

  5. You wonder why people aren't keen on Thailand?

How about the prospect/media images of visitors getting stuck at the airport for days while being surrounded by tanks and protestors? At a different level the country is also one of China's best proof points why democracy doesn't work.

  6. The interest in Egypt is surprising. It could have been getting a boost due to the transformers movie – the previews would have been out already at that time.

As for Thailand, I believe the strongest image Chinese people have of it is of the “renyao” or “trannys” as we know them. That could be related.

From the report itself, the view of USA as being medically advanced is also interesting. Seems even Americans aren't so sure about that right now.

Also from the report, I find it interesting (but nor surpising) that they find USA and Canada to NOT have rich cultures. They're some of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.

  7. Haha, interesting point.

Plz think about that: this survey had been done 'on-line', right? People who really 'belive' in mass media, such as my parents (around 50) or my grandparents (80+), they wouldn't do the survey online… and the demographic that conducted the online survey — they totally can click on different links, get the information they want. They can think, and make judgements.

Thailand's image (mainly) from they “veryvery smart” ZERO-cost of tour guide service. For chinese people who wanna checkout the culture of thailand — sorry, all their experience is from the local SHOPS, and spending their money for craps.

  8. 'culture' is translated as “rich in history” in Chinese… I think that's a misunderstanding.

  9. I checked the full-version of the survey…sorry to say that, but I don't see the purpose of this study.
    1. Population size in China VS the sample size…
    2. the survey was conducted online… honestly guys, no bias, internet culture is treated as SUB-cultures here…(anybody familliars with OTAKU in Japan?)
    3. The survey is very 'qutitative based'… Sometimes, numbers drag you to the opposite direction. Don't you wounder why? Then, please ask.

Better idea to conduct another survey. plz, right sample demographic, better way to reach they, advence questions, and plzplzplz consider the culture difference between Asian and westeners.

Short hint: Why ladies here show interests of South Korean? CHECK OUT THEY MOVIE STARS, AND ALL POPULAR TV EPISODS FROM STREAM WEBSITE.

  14. This survey is indeed surprising. At first, it seemed spun up, but now after almost a year, another survey showed similar results. So I’m guessing there must be some truth in all this. French perfumes and wine for the women, and American crushes for the men? lol!
