Job: China Correspondent for NPR

Looks like a great job!

Love the final line: “Occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions.”

UPDATE: For some reason I received a lot of email - 8 messages in total - about this posting (rare occurrence that people email rather than post comments). Among them, the following points raised:

- The title of this post implies that it is for NPR. Actually American Public Media is a completely different entity than NPR; NPR stations picks up some APM shows like Marketplace.

- Absolutely shocked that they now require journalists to “walk, sit, and stand; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch; frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.” Whatever happened to the need hold your liquor and file on deadline (at the same time)?

- Ominous is the required ability to “ stoop, kneel, or crouch”. Delicately omits “grovel”. The weather warning probably refers to NPR plans to put him in a tent somewhere in Shanghai’s western marshes?

The below announcement is regarding a Social Media strategist position in our Shanghai office, but we are looking elsewhere in Asia as well, including Malaysia.

Are you the right person? Shoot me an email: thomas.crampton at ogilvy dot com

We need an ace Digital professional in Shanghai who knows the Internet and Social Media in China.

Three week seminar and travel program to Honolulu, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Jakarta will focus on new economic and political realities in the wake of the global economic crisis

HONOLULU (Dec. 16) - The East-West Center is accepting applications for the Spring 2010 Jefferson Fellowships for journalists, a three-week seminar and travel program for journalists from Asia Pacific and the United States. Journalists in the Spring 2010 program, April 17-May 9, will spend 6 days in Honolulu in dialogue sessions with Asia Pacific regional experts and with one another followed by travel to Hong Kong, Shanghai and Jakarta to explore “new realities” in the U.S.-Asia Pacific region in the wake of the shock of the global economic crisis and in the face of the growing challenge of climate change.

This special Spring 2010 program also provides an opportunity to network with hundreds of regional journalists, high level newsmakers and regional experts at the East-West Center’s 2nd International Media Conference in Hong Kong from April 25-28 and to cover the opening of the World Expo on May 1 in Shanghai.

The Jefferson Fellowships provide an excellent opportunity for journalists to broaden their knowledge of Asia Pacific regional issues, gain on-the-ground perspectives, and engage in dialogue with colleagues from across Asia and the U.S. Since 1967, more than 600 journalists from 27 countries and territories across the region have participated in the program.

Theme: “Reporting New Realities: Beyond the Economic Crisis”
The shock of the global financial crisis and renewed commitment to addressing climate change pose new realities for countries around the world. Leaders at the APEC Summit in Singapore in November 2009 stated “We cannot go back to ‘growth as usual’ or ‘trade as usual.’ The post-crisis landscape will be different. We need a new growth paradigm. We need a fresh model of economic integration.” But what will such models look like, and how are countries positioned to implement them?

Participants in the Spring 2010 Jefferson Fellowships will explore new realities in the U.S.- Asia Pacific region in the wake of the shock of the global economic crisis and in the face of the growing challenge of climate change. This special Jefferson Fellowships program will begin with one week of dialogue sessions at the East-West Center in Honolulu, followed by an opportunity to attend the East-West Center’s 2nd International Media Conference in Hong Kong on the theme “Reporting New Realities in Asia and the Pacific.” The conference will provide on-the-ground updates on news and media issues throughout the world’s most dynamic region through keynote speakers, panels of journalists and other professionals, plenary sessions with regional experts, and media workshops.

Participants will then travel to Shanghai and Jakarta to explore some of these new realities. China and Indonesia are countries with huge populations and rising influence in the Asia Pacific region. As members of the G-20, they both have a seat at the new international table to discuss the future of global governance. Yet both are still developing countries that are seeking a model of sustainable economic growth in the face of new global economic realities, regional power balances and climate change. Participants will visit Shanghai in advance of the opening of the World Expo on the theme “Better City, Better Life” to explore the significance of the Expo for China and for Shanghai, the new Chinese-U.S. relationship, and how China is moving forward with its economic recovery and future development. In Jakarta, participants will explore the under-reported “new reality” of democratic and economic transition in the world’s fourth most populous country and the largest Muslim democracy. They will examine the many challenges that lie ahead for the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual country to develop a robust, effective democracy and economic growth in a challenging new global landscape.

# # # #

For 50 years, the East-West Center has been promoting better relations and understanding among the people and nations of the United States, Asia, and the Pacific through cooperative study, research, and dialogue. The Jefferson Fellowships, established in 1967, is the flagship media program of the East-West Center.

Job: Reuters Pakistan Bureau Chief

thomsonreuters.pngAh, to be young again! This looks like a fantastic job.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Bureau Chief, Pakistan
Reference code: #PAK1994

Reuters is looking for a top-notch journalist and manager to become bureau chief in Pakistan, covering one of the world’s most exciting news stories.

These are tumultuous times for Pakistan as the government grapples with militants who control swathes of territory along the border with Afghanistan. The Obama administration has put “AfPak” at the heart of its foreign policy agenda, but many would argue that the bigger problem of the two is nuclear-armed Pakistan, not Afghanistan.

The Pakistan bureau chief must be able to anchor a diverse, multimedia news file, leading from the front with excellent reporting, writing and analytical skills of her/his own. She/he must ensure that Reuters routinely breaks news and sets the agenda on the key security and political stories for our media and financial clients.

Pakistan is sandwiched between conflict-ridden Afghanistan and the country’s old enemy, India, an offensive is under way against Taliban militants inside the country, and the country¹s cities have been hit by a series of guerrilla-style attacks. This makes the bureau chief role a high-pressure position where the safety of staff and stringers is of paramount concern.

The successful candidate must have experience working as a journalist in hostile environments.

The Islamabad-based bureau chief will be a key member of a senior editorial team in South Asia, working closely with colleagues in a region where every story crosses borders and clients rely on us to deliver focus and insight. The position involves close liaison with the South Asia Editor in Mumbai to ensure that editorial operations meet competitive pressures and are in line with the priorities of the business. She/he will keep the business informed about editorial successes and participate actively in raising editorial’s profile with clients through public engagements.

Qualifications
- At least five years’ reporting experience
- A strong track record as a manager, particularly across cultures and diverse groups
- Excellent news judgement and an ability to write and edit quickly, with flair and insight, across all asset classes of the text file
- Experience working in hostile environments
- Ability to work under pressure and often unsocial hours
- Ability to build contacts and proven ability to break news
- An understanding of how pictures and TV operations work
- An understanding of the role news plays in Thomson Reuters¹ business priorities, and an ability to network with senior business staff, customers and contacts
